Santa Barbara County Sheriff has a new deterrent

Ferrari  K-9 Krypto.

Krypto is a 15-month-old Black Labrador and a force to be reckoned with. He began working for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff in July 2018, and has already developed quite the reputation as a “push-button Ferrari.”

Thanks to the help from the National Police Dog Foundation, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff purchased Krypto in June 2018. The K-9 trained in narcotics with his new handler Deputy Ian Ur for what Ur describes as a “grueling four weeks.” Ur explains how the process involves “associating his toy with drugs, then pulling the toy out of the equation so that the dog only indicates on drugs.”

During this time, Krypto became known for his high energy, always looking for his ball aggressively. Ur describes how “Krypto would crawl into anything, and jump on everything in hopes of finding his reward.”

At the Santa Barbara County Jail, K-9 Krypto’s role is not only to look for drugs, but also to act as a visible deterrent. Krypto’s authoritative presence helps to dissuade any inmates from possessing drugs in the facility. The K-9’s tasks also include searching through inmates’ property boxes, housing units, and any areas that may have concealed drugs.

The National Police Dog Foundation is proud to have contributed to Krypto’s purchase and is glad to see the K-9 already fulfilling his purpose in such an impressive way. We look forward to seeing this push-button Ferrari continue to zoom ahead.

The purchasing of K-9s is very expensive and most K-9 Units simply do not have sufficient funds. The National Police Dog Foundation is proud to assist law enforcement departments in the cost of the purchasing of K-9s, but we need your help. To donate, please click on the button below. The departments and K-9s really need your help.
