NPDF To Award K-9 Health Insurance Grants

The National Police Dog Foundation is very pleased to announce its first round of K-9 Health Insurance Grants.

Funds from the National Police Dog Foundation K-9 Health Insurance Fund, which was established from an initial donation by Petplan pet insurance last fall, will back the grant awards. The fund is supported by designated gifts from the public to the Foundation and a $50 donation from Petplan for each new pet insurance policy booked by the public using the campaign code NPDF10 at https://nationalpolicedogfoundation.org/petplan/. Pet parents who use the code also receive a 10% discount on their new policy.

The purpose of the fund is to offer grants to law enforcement K-9 units, ensuring the continued well-being of the K-9s.

“Petplan’s support of the K-9 Health Insurance Fund, and their passion for improving quality of life and access to essential veterinary care for K-9 officers dovetails perfectly with our mission,” says Jim Reilly, the National Police Dog Foundation President. “Our hope is that this grant program will not only help cash-strapped police departments take the best care of four-legged officers but also that it gets the message out to the public that there’s a simple way they can help ensure K-9s get medical treatment—and that is by donating to the fund.”

In addition to hereditary health conditions, a K-9 officer’s breed may dictate, occupational hazards like gunshot or stab wounds, lacerations, tail injuries, and exposure to highly toxic substances like illegal drugs all threaten a police dog’s health (and a local police department’s budget). Veterinary care can run in the thousands to treat these types of injuries, so protecting K-9s with pet insurance, which reimburses up to 90% of the bill, makes good fiscal sense for the agencies.

In addition to funding pet insurance protection for active working dogs, the K-9 Health Insurance Fund will help ensure K-9 heroes get access to the best possible care during their retirement when the burden of their medical care shifts to the handler/adopter.

The National Police Dog Foundation would like to thank Petplan for the initial donation to launch the fund and for their commitment to support the fund in the future. Petplan’s past and continued support and generous donations to the Foundation are improving the lives of K-9s nationwide.

To launch the fund, we are offering five grants to pay for K-9 medical insurance for one year. The idea is to get K-9s covered when they start their active duty. The grants will be limited to 1-3 year-old K-9s. With your support and donations to the fund, it is our hope that the National Police Dog Foundation will be able to assist agencies, not only for the initial year but into the future as well. We hope to fund many more grants in the months and years to come.

The National Police Dog Foundation is proud to grant funds and services that support law enforcement agencies, handlers, and K-9s.

Grant application deadline for these initial grants is August 1st, 2017. No applications will be accepted after this date. The first five K-9 insurance grants will be awarded at the end of August, 2017.
