Meet K-9 Lucky, a hardworking, five-year-old male German Shepherd. He works for the Milan Police Department in Milan, Tennessee with his Handler, Sergeant Joe Fountain. Lucky is a dual-purpose K-9, and for the past year has been involved in narcotics, tracking, article search and apprehension at the Milan Police Department. The Department is a recent recipient of the National Police Dog Foundation’s 2019 Heat Alarm Grant. Thanks to the generous supporters that made this possible, K-9 Lucky will be protected from the dangers of being left in a hot patrol car while he’s on duty.
“Summers in Milan, Tennessee are very hot and extremely humid,” said Sergeant Fountain “I spend a lot of time outside my patrol car, answering calls. This heat alarm will help ease my mind knowing that my K-9 parter Lucky is safe.” The Sergeant went on to explain that he had had some close calls with his old dog who due to circumstances out of his control had the dog left in the car for long periods of times.
K-9 Lucky and Sergeant Fountain now enjoy a very special bond that took several months to form. About a year ago, Lucky’s first Handler was killed in an off duty car accident. Sergeant Fountain helped Lucky to get back to a better place and to the work he loves. The Sergeant tells us “He can’t wait to play or for us to work together. If I’m away from the patrol car and I look back, he is sitting up and watching me. While in the car, Lucky is very quiet and laid back but when the door opens up, he is ready to work and comes alive!”
Thanks to a matching grant from Spirit of Blue and the generous donations from people like you, the National Police Dog Foundation is happy to have been able to provide a Heat Alarm Grant to K-9 Lucky and Sergeant Fountain of the Milan Police Department, Milan, Tennessee. Have a safe summer K-9 Lucky!
