With the help of the National Police Dog Foundation, Roeland Park PD establishes a K-9 Unit.
In June of 2018, the Roeland Park Police Department in Roeland Park, Kansas reached a hard-earned milestone: establishing a K-9 unit. This is thanks to the purchase of their first member: K-9 Rango, a 1-year-old Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd mix.
After Rango’s purchase, the K-9 and his new handler, Sergeant Cory Honas, got right to training. The training process was quite an adjustment, as Rango trained to be both a patrol and narcotics K-9. Thankfully, Honas explains, “Rango is very toy driven, so he always works hard for his Kong.”
Rango officially joined the department at the end of July. Honas describes how “he will assist our city along with numerous other cities in the Kansas City Metro area.” In addition to daily patrol and narcotics operations and weekly trainings, Rango will also be available for call-outs when needed.
Honas describes how “the National Police Dog Foundation was very instrumental in helping us establish our very first K-9 Unit.” Sergeant Honas also notes how “the application process was easy, and Jerry and Mike were awesome to work with.” Not only is Rango the first-ever K-9 in Roeland Park, but he’s also the first K-9 in North East Johnson County, Kansas.
“Without the help from the National Police Dog Foundation,” Honas explains, “many law enforcement organizations would go without a K-9 unit.”
The National Police Dog Foundation is proud to have made this contribution and looks forward to continuing to help other departments establish K-9 units.
The purchasing and training of K-9s can be very expensive and most K-9 departments simply do not have the funds they need.
